Drag race: Bugatti Chiron Super Sport vs tuned BMW M5 vs tuned BMW M4
October 14, 2023 by Jamie Edkins
Mat’s made a beeline for the Bugatti today, and it’s clear to see why. Mounted behind him is an 8.0-litre quad-turbocharged W16 engine with 1,600hp and 1,600Nm of torque. This is sent to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, so it should be pretty good off the line. It’s packed with luxurious leather and exquisite detailing, which does add to the weight. The Chiron tips the scales at 1,995kg, and it costs a whopping £4 million.
That makes the cars it’s up against seem like great value for money. The first challenger is a tuned BMW M5 Competition. Under the bonnet is a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine which, as standard, outs out 625hp and 750Nm of torque. That would be plenty in most circumstances, but not today. This particular M5 has therefore been tuned to produce 1,000hp and 1,200Nm of torque. This is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and it weighs in at 1,865kg. The price? Well it undercuts the Bugatti by over £3.9 million. The car plus all the mods cost £146,000.
The tuned BMW M4 seems like even more of a bargain. The car and all the mods cost £130,000, and for this you get 1,000hp and 1,000Nm of torque. Power comes courtesy of a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged straight-six engine, mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. This is the all-wheel-drive version of the M4, and it weighs 1,850kg.
So will either of these bonkers BMWs be a match for the Chiron? You’ll have to watch the video to find out.
