Drag race: new Audi S5 vs rivals

The New Audi S5 has finally made it to our shores, and this warmed-up version of Audi’s four-door still uses a V6 petrol engine. It’s faster and more powerful than the old Audi S4 it replaces, but is it fast enough to leave the other German performance saloons in its dust?

To find out, we’ve lined the new S5 up against a BMW M340i and a Mercedes-AMG C43, and we’re going to drag race them over the standing quarter mile to see which is fastest.

Let’s take a closer look at the stats…

New Audi S5

The new Audi S5 is powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 engine with 367hp and 550Nm of torque. Like all fast Audis it has Quattro all-wheel drive, so it should be pretty quick off the line.

Power is sent to the ground via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, and the S5 weighs in at a pretty lardy 1,950kg. Prices start from just over £69,000.

BMW M340i

Just like the Audi, the BMW M340i is powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder engine, only this time it’s a straight-six and not a V6. It puts out 374hp and 500Nm of torque, and power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The BMW is 280kg lighter than the S5, tipping the scales at 1,670kg. This 2019 car cost just under £50,000 when it was new, however a new M340i will set you back £59,835.

Mercedes-AMG C43

And now we come to the odd one out, because the Mercedes-AMG C43 is the only car here with a four-cylinder engine. It’s the same 2.0-litre turbocharged unit you’ll find in the flagship C63 S, however it doesn’t have any of the hybrid gubbins boosting the power.

It’s still the most powerful car here though with 435hp and 500Nm of torque. This is sent to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic gearbox, and the car weighs in at 1,810kg. A new C43 will set you back £67,500.
