Mercedes-AMG Drag race: new C63 S vs A45 S vs E63 S

We’ve managed to get hold of the all-new Mercedes-AMG C63 S E-Performance for a drag race, so we’re going to pitch this plug-in hybrid against some other AMG models to see how it stacks up.

It’s lined up against the A45 S, a hot hatchback which uses the same four-cylinder engine but without the hybrid tech, and the good old-fashioned 4.0-litre V8 E63 S. Let’s take a closer look at these car’s stats.

Mercedes-AMG A45 S

Starting with the smallest car here, the AMG A45 S uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 421hp and 500Nm of torque. This is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

This is actually the same engine you’ll find in the C63, only it doesn’t have any hybrid tech which makes it considerably lighter. The A45 S tips the scales at 1,550kg, and it’ll set you back a rather hefty £63,370.

New Mercedes-AMG C63 S E-Performance

Let’s move on to the new kid on the block. The Mercedes-AMG C63 S E-Performance takes the A45’s 2.0-litre petrol engine and pairs it with an electric motor, and as a result it puts out 680hp and a whopping 1,020Nm of torque.

This is sent to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic gearbox. The issue with all that tech is that it does add weight, and the C63 comes in at 2,190kg. Still, at least you’ll save some weight when it lightens your wallet of almost £100,000.

Mercedes-AMG E63 S

Finally then we come to the E63, the only car here sporting an eight-cylinder engine. The 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 puts out 612hp and 850Nm of torque, and this is sent to all four wheels via a nine-speed multi-clutch automatic gearbox.

It’s a couple of hundred kilograms lighter than the C63, which is crazy when you consider it’s the C-Class’s bigger brother, and when it was new it would’ve cost you £90,000.
