New BMW M5 vs rivals: which will win in a drag race? 

Very few cars have caused quite such a stir as the new BMW M5. It’s one of the most controversial M cars ever made thanks to one thing: its weight. Going hybrid has meant adding a lot of heft to this super saloon, but what effect will this have on performance?

Well to find out we’ve lined it up against some stiff competition from Audi and Mercedes for a good old-fashioned quarter mile drag race. Let’s take a closer look at the stats.

New BMW M5

The G90 BMW M5 is the first example of this iconic super saloon to go hybrid. It has a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine mated to an electric motor, and all the electrical gubbins means it weighs a whopping 2,435kg. That’s over half a tonne more than the old M5.

To counteract this added weight, this car is packing some serious power. It has 727hp and 1,000Nm of torque, which is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. It’s also pretty pricey at £111,405.

Audi RS6 Performance

In comparison, the Audi RS6 Performance seems pretty low-tech. It’s powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine with no electrical assistance at all, but it still puts out 630hp and 850Nm of torque.

As with the BMW power is sent to all four wheels, and the Audi has an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Crucially though, the RS6 weighs almost 400kg less than the M5, tipping the scales at 2,075kg. It is more expensive though at £116,120.

Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door S

Finally then we come to the Mercedes. It has a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 with 639hp and 900Nm of torque. Like the other two it’s four-wheel drive, but this car has a nine-speed multi-clutch gearbox.

The AMG GT 4-door sits bang in the middle in terms of weight at 2,135kg, but it’s the most expensive by a long way. The 2019 example we’re using today is worth around £70,000, but a brand new one will cost you an eye-watering £157,000.

So how will the new M5 get on? It may be the most powerful here, but being several hundred kilograms heavier than both the other cars could play against it. You’ll have to watch the video to see what happens.
