Used Jeep Renegade pros and cons
Is a second-hand Jeep Renegade a good car?
The Jeep Renegade might be a small SUV, and an alternative to the likes of the Volkswagen T-Cross and Suzuki Vitara, but it looks every inch the upright, squared-off, true-blue Jeep.
The cabin looks just as rugged as the outside. There’s some contrasting metal-effect trim for the dash and doors, and the optional digital dials even come with a mud-splatter screen effect. It’s all a bit cartoonish.
This would all be fine except that the materials used in the Jeep Renegade’s cabin leave much to be desired. Which is a posh way of saying they’re too cheap.
Annoyingly, there’s not very much space in the back seats. For all the Renegade’s pretence at being a chunky SUV, there’s just not enough legroom in the back, although the tall roofline means that at least there’s good headroom.
The boot is also rather too average. There’s 350 litres of space back there, but that’s less than you get in a Golf hatchback, and the space shrinks further if you go for the plug-in hybrid model.
The Jeep Renegade is far from the best small SUV to drive. It’s noisy on motorways, and it leans over quite a lot on its long-travel suspension when you get to some corners. Four-wheel drive models are genuinely talented when you take them into the forests and fields, but not many owners will actually need that kind of ability.
On the upside, the Jeep Renegade looks different, and is certainly a proper, rugged Jeep if you get the four-wheel drive model, so it’s worth a look.
What to look for when buying a used Jeep Renegade
The Renegade seems to be mostly solidly built, but some owners have reported electrical issues — with a few reports of total electrical failure, even while driving. Problems with the touchscreen are also common.
Not enough Jeep owners responded to the most recent Driver Power survey to get a solid handle on how happy customers are, but Fiat — and of course the Renegade is essentially a Fiat 500X under the skin — finished a poor 31st out of 32 brands. That said, only 11 per cent of Fiat owners reported a problem with their car, so clearly reliability isn’t what’s causing the issues.
