About Land Rover

Land Rover began production of the Series 1 in 1948. Simply called ‘Land Rover’ when first on sale, the utilitarian original became the Defender in 1990. The arrival of the Range Rover in 1970 and the Discovery in 1989 began the expansion of the range. There’s now a broad family of models, grouped under the sub-brands Defender, Discovery, and Range Rover.

There’s been a strong push upmarket over the past couple of decades. Land Rover still makes tough, go-anywhere cars, but luxury is now just as important as off-road ability.

Land Rover has been slower than most to adopt hybrid and pure electric power, but the number of electrified models is growing. The electric Range Rover is the brand’s first fully electric car.

Who owns Land Rover?

Since 2008 Land Rover has been a subsidiary of the Indian company, Tata Motors. Land Rover is part of Jaguar Land Rover, with the Land Rover side of the business selling many more cars than Jaguar.

Are Land Rover cars reliable?

Sorry, no. There’s no point in sugar-coating this, Land Rovers can be troublesome cars. They are usually close to the bottom of customer satisfaction and reliability surveys.

Why are Land Rover cars so expensive?

These are large, luxurious, high-tech cars, which usually goes hand in hand with a high price tag. Land Rovers are certainly expensive compared with mainstream SUVs from the likes of Hyundai or Toyota. Compare the price with the equivalent Mercedes, though, and Land Rover’s pricing doesn’t appear quite so greedy.

What are the 7 models of Land Rover?

Nowadays Land Rover is divided into three sub-brands; Defender, Discovery, and Range Rover. In the Defender family, there’s the 90, 110, and 130, as well as the Defender Hard Top Commercial and the high-performance Defender Octa. The 90 is a three-door, the 110 is a five-door, and the 130 is a stretched version of the five-door. In the Discovery range, buyers can choose between the smaller Discovery Sport and the full-fat Discovery. Range Rover buyers can pick the Evoque, Velar, Range Rover Sport, or Range Rover. So, if you count the Hard Top and Octa is models in their own right, there are 11 models rather than seven.

What is the disadvantage of Land Rover cars?

Iffy reliability is one disadvantage. The relatively high price is another. Land Rover has also been slower than most to introduce low-emissions and fully electric models, which makes many models costly to tax for company car drivers and expensive to run for owners.
