Is a second hand Mazda CX-30 a good car?

If you’re after a stylish SUV and you’re not too bothered about space and practicality, the Mazda CX-30 is a great option. Because although it’s not particularly roomy, it looks great and is enjoyable to drive.

The exterior has a sleek design paired with chunky black cladding that gives it a hint of ruggedness. However it’s a much simpler look inside, which is no bad thing because it’s minimalist rather than plain and everything feels well put together.

The infotainment screen is a bit small and it’s actually not a touchscreen, but you control it with a dial in the centre console that’s intuitive and easy to use on the move.

Space is pretty good for those in the front, but if you regularly carry people in the back seats they will find it a bit cramped. It also means it’s a bit of a squeeze for bulky child seats, though you do get ISOFIX mounting points on the outer rear seats. The boot is smaller than alternatives such as the SEAT Ateca and Audi Q2, too.

Still, the Mazda CX-30 redeems itself in the way it drives down a twisty road, being one of the more enjoyable small SUVs on a country road. This does mean it’s not quite as comfortable over bumps as something like a Skoda Karoq, but keen drivers will likely consider this a fair trade. It’s a bit of a shame that even the more powerful engine isn’t particularly powerful, and you are limited to a choice of two petrol engines, with no diesel or hybrid options. The Mazda MX-30 is a similarly sized electric car if that’s what you’re after.

It’s worth noting that the Mazda CX-30 scored an incredible 99% for adult occupant protection in Euro NCAP safety tests, though its 86% rating for child occupant protection is more in line with alternatives.

What to look for when buying a used Mazda CX-30

The good news is that Mazda has a fantastic reputation for reliability. Although the CX-30 did not place in the top 50 cars in the 2024 Driver Power Satisfaction Survey (likely due to the fact there aren’t many on the road to get data from owners), Mazda as a whole scored a very respectable 7th out of 32 manufacturers.

There have been very few recalls too, relating to faulty rear-view cameras and electronic bootlids that can close unexpectedly. Nothing too drastic, and not for every CX-30, but worth checking they have been completed on any car you’re looking at.

There are no recurring issues to look out for, so just do the usual used car checks, such as looking closely at the bodywork for any signs of damage or repairs, and make sure all of the electronics work as intended.

The Mazda CX-30 is fairly fuel efficient, though you’ll struggle to get more than 40-45mpg with either of the engine choices. Going for a proper hybrid alternative should return better economy, with the Renault Captur being a good option.
