Is a second hand MINI Electric (2019-2024) a good car?

The Mini Cooper Electric mixes a posh image, a compact size, and electric power into one appealing package that’s great in town, and fun on a twisty road.

It’s up against some tough competition in the shape of the Fiat 500e, Peugeot e-208, and (bigger but more affordable) MG4, but the Mini delights with its sharp driving experience, even if its range isn’t very impressive.

In fact, the Mini Electric (the one built between 2019 and 2024) can only manage a claimed range of 145 miles, and often a good deal less than that in the real world. It’s a car for town journeys, or short country hops only.

The cabin is basically the same as that of the regular petrol-powered Mini, and gets neat digital instruments and a good touchscreen. It’s roomy, comfy, and well-made up front, but cramped in the back and the Electric version of the Mini was only ever sold with three doors, not the roomier five-door body.

The good news about the small battery is that it takes only around four hours to charge at home, and 36 minutes on a DC fast charger. Although the Mini Cooper Electric’s ride is firm over bumps, it’s also great fun to drive with sharp steering and a fun chassis.

What to look for when buying a used MINI Electric (2019-2024)

The Mini Cooper Electric seems to be one of the most reliable cars in its class, with not only few owners reporting any issues, but no recalls for quality problems. The Mini hatchback — including both electric and petrol versions — finished an excellent 5th in the 2024 Driver Power Top 50 Cars To Own list, with a very high rating for quality and reliability, while Mini as a brand finished in 20th place, out of 32, with a Toyota-like low of just 12% of owners reporting faults with their cars.

MINI Electric (2019-2024) FAQs

A Mini Cooper Electric can use a Tesla charger, but only one of those Tesla Superchargers that has been opened up for use by other EV brands, so you’ll have to check online. To use one, you’ll need to open an account with Tesla via that company’s smartphone app.

One upside of the Mini Electric’s small battery is that it charges quickly — a full charge takes just over four hours from a home wallbox 7.4kW charger. It’s not so good at fast-charging though, as the maximum 50kW DC charging speed means that it takes 35 minutes to get from 10-80% charge.

Officially, the Mini Electric will go for 145 miles on a full charge, and according to owners the likely real-world range is somewhere between 120 miles in summer and 100 miles in winter, although when Carwow originally tested the Mini Electric, we were able to get 154 miles out of one charge with some careful driving.

This generation of Mini Electric was made in the Mini Plant Oxford (the old Rover Cowley factory for history fans), the same place the latest Mini Electric is being built, too.
