Is a second hand Peugeot e-2008 a good car?
Peugeot sees electricity as just another kind of engine, like petrol or diesel - so there’s very little to mark the Peugeot e-2008 out as a fully electric car. You get some badging, green flashes on the number plate and of course, a plug socket instead of a fuel filler. That makes the e-2008 the perfect electric car if you’d rather fly under the radar and not shout to the world that you’re driving an EV.
The e-2008 was launched in 2020 and underwent a facelift in late 2023. Used models will mostly be pre-facelift, which means they have a 50kWh battery and a 134hp electric motor driving the front wheels. Official range is 214 miles on a full charge, though this is more like 150-160 miles in the real world - the post-2023 cars are much more efficient, capable of around 200 miles from only a marginally larger battery.
The e-2008 isn’t much fun to drive on a twisting road, but it has soft suspension and a quiet cabin making it very comfortable whether you’re nipping about town or soaking up the motorway miles. However, not everybody will find a driving position to suit them for maximum comfort - the e-2008 uses Peugeot’s ‘i-Cockpit’ arrangement of a small steering wheel and high-set dials, and certain body types just can’t find a position that feels natural without blocking some of the gauges.
The e-2008 is mechanically very similar to the Vauxhall Mokka-e and the Citroen e-C4, so if you like the way it drives but want a package that looks different, those are great alternatives. Other options include the Hyundai Kona Electric, MG ZS EV and BYD Atto 3.
What to look for when buying a used Peugeot e-2008
The e-2008 has been subject to one official recall so far, affecting only 1100 cars. Make sure your car is one of the unaffected ones, or check with your local Peugeot dealer that the recall work has been carried out before purchase.
With a relatively limited range, the e-2008 is likely to have spent a lot of its life in town, and as with any city car you should check carefully for car park dings, parking scrapes and kerbed wheels. It’s also worth taking an extended test drive to make sure you can find a comfortable driving position with that steering wheel and dial arrangement, too.
Peugeot as a brand hasn’t had a sterling reputation for reliability in the past, but in recent years that’s turned around - it came sixth in the 2024 Driver Power Satisfaction Survey, which is impressive. Better yet, the 2008 model range as a whole ranked as the eighth best car to own overall, with exterior fit and finish rated highest in the entire survey.
This is reflected in owner feedback, with very few recurring complaints indicating general high levels of reliability.
