About Porsche

Porsche was founded by Ferdinand Porsche in 1931 and was based in Stuttgart, Germany. It started life offering vehicle development work, and was tasked by the German government to build a ‘people’s car’, which would become the Volkswagen Beetle. During World War II, it helped work on military vehicles.

The Porsche 356 is considered by many to be the first proper Porsche, which was built after the war ended. In the 1960s, following some success in motorsport, Porsche introduced the 911 – a rear-engined sports car that has gone on to be one of the most iconic vehicles ever made.

Around the turn of the century, Porsche was a struggling niche brand, but the introduction of the Cayenne SUV in 2002 turned its fortunes around. Today, it has a range of sports cars, saloons and SUVs that have made it one of the most desirable car makers on the planet.

Porsche cars range wildly in price depending on which model you go for. The cheapest is the 718 Cayman sports car, which starts at about £52,000. At the opposite end of the scale, you have top-spec Cayenne and Taycan models starting at more than £160,000.
Porsche’s two main factories are in Leipzig and near its headquarters in Stuttgart, both in Germany.
Porsche has an excellent reliability record, which isn’t something that can be said for most premium brands. It’s worth noting, though, that if anything does go wrong, it’s likely that repairs will be quite expensive.
PDK stands for ‘Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe’. It translates to ‘double clutch gearbox’, which is a technology common across most modern cars. This works by having two clutches, with one engaging even gears and one taking care of odd gears. When you’re in a gear, the gearbox prepares the clutch for the next gear to improve shift speeds.
