Is a second hand Skoda Kamiq a good car?

The Skoda Kamiq is a small, but roomy, SUV which is sort of like buying a sensible pair of loafers instead of the jazzier, sportier trainers that are the Ford Puma and the Peugeot 2008

It’s plain on the outside, but the boxy body makes for lots of space on the inside, and if the dashboard design is also rather plain, then at least it’s also rigorously well-built and the Kamiq reeks of quality.

There’s an easy-to-use central touchscreen which goes up to as much as 9.1 inches across, depending on the model and the specification.

Rear seat space is generous, but while the boot looks big, at 400 litres it’s actually slightly less than what you get in the Peugeot or the Ford.

The basic 95hp engine is a good all-rounder, but if you regularly do long motorway runs, perhaps consider the more powerful 1.5-litre version. The Kamiq is easy and simple to drive, with a comfortable ride over bumps, but it’s not much fun and the automatic gearbox can be hesitant at low speeds.

The Skoda Kamiq is a good choice for families, though, offering plenty of space in a compact package that’s safe and good to drive.

What to look for when buying a used Skoda Kamiq

Skoda has an excellent reliability reputation, and the Kamiq isn’t likely to dent that, not least because all of its engines and mechanical parts are well proven in so many other VW Group products. Just watch the DSG automatic gearbox — it needs careful and regular servicing if it’s not to become troublesome.

Skoda finished 23rd out of 32 brands in the 2024 Driver Power customer satisfaction survey — six places ahead of VW, and four ahead of Audi — with 23% of owners reporting problems with their cars. The Kamiq finished in 40th position in the Driver Power Top 50 Cars To Own list, but had quite a poor rating for reliability and quality.

Skoda Kamiq FAQs

It should be, as Skoda has an excellent reputation for reliability, but the Kamiq didn’t get a great score in that respect from owners in the 2024 Driver Power Top 50 Cars To Own list. Beware issues with the DSG automatic gearbox.

No, there’s no Kamiq model with four-wheel drive. It’s built on the same Volkswagen Group platform as the Fabia, the VW Polo, Seat Ibiza and Arona, and many more, and that platform can’t be built with four-wheel drive.

The Kamiq is built in Skoda’s headquarters factory at Mladá Boleslav in the Czech Republic.

The Karoq is significantly bigger than the Kamiq. If it helps, think of it like this — the Kamiq is effectively a high-rise version of the Fabia. The Karoq is a high-rise version of the Octavia.
