Used automatic estate cars FAQs

There are a few good choices in this category. There’s the Toyota Corolla Touring Sports Hybrid if you want an uncomplicated car with great reliability, and a more engaging driving experience than you’d expect. It has a huge boot, too. If you want maximum boot space, then consider a Skoda Superb Estate, with the DSG automatic gearbox. Utterly huge inside, with a 660-litre boot, and all of the comfort and refinement you could ask for. Want something a bit posher? Go for a BMW 5 Series Touring. The last-generation F90 model is an all-time great, with plenty of boot space but all of the BMW driving experience that you’d expect.

Estate cars need a little more care when buying, as many can fall into the trap of being used as ersatz vans by painters and decorators, which can really destroy interiors and rear suspension. In fairness, this usually only happens to older models, but it’s worth checking carefully for signs of abuse. Equally, check the car’s history to see if it’s been used as a taxi in the past. After that, do the usual service record, mileage, and condition checks, and when test-driving listen carefully for any nasty sounds from the rear suspension that might indicate that the car has been overloaded at times.
