Used luxury cars FAQs

Without question it’s the Mercedes S-Class. Subtle outside, luxurious inside, and thanks to sharp depreciation, not that expensive to buy second-hand. Choose from a plug-in hybrid with a long, 62-mile electric range, a more traditional diesel, or an insane V8 AMG version.

If you want true reliability with your luxury, then track down a Lexus LS. There aren’t many to be found — it’s not a huge seller as a new car — but we’ll bet good money on a second-hand LS lasting way better than any other used luxury car, well into the future.

It depends on what you’re looking for. Big luxury models depreciate fast, for the most part, so canny second hand buyers can pick one up for surprisingly affordable prices, especially if you check auctions for cars being sold off by airport chauffeur companies and the like. Of course, the running costs will be huge, both for fuel and servicing, but if you budget for it, you can have champagne driving for a Vimto price.

The best bets from a residual value point of view are the Mercedes G-Class, Porsche Panamera, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport — all of those retain better than 60% of their original value over the first three years. Just make sure you keep up the servicing and maintenance if you want to hold onto that value.
