Is a second hand Volvo EX30 a good car?

The Volvo EX30 is a small all-electric SUV with Scandi style and Volvo safety, which is so good we crowned it Carwow Car of the Year for 2024.

The EX30 is small but it’s really good looking, and the minimalist cabin is also stylish, and very comfortable, with lots of clever recycled plastics. However, the single big touchscreen — there are no other instruments — is awfully fiddly to use and very distracting.

Boot space isn’t particularly impressive at just 318 litres up to the parcel shelf, but it’s square and flat, and there’s a tiny front boot (froot?) too, for your charging cable.

There are two battery options with the smaller battery capable of taking you for a claimed 214 miles. The bigger battery has a maximum range of 298 miles.

The EX30 is good fun to drive, with decent chassis control and nice steering, but its best aspect is just how comfortable it is.

What to look for when buying a used Volvo EX30

The EX30 is a very new model, so it’s a bit hard to get a proper hold on just how reliable and well-made it is, but the big touchscreen has already become a common problem point, with buyers sometimes facing a ‘bricked’ blank screen, which means you can’t access any of the car’s functions and not even see your speed. Volvo has actually had to buy some EX30s back from disgruntled customers, but a constant flow of over-the-air software updates seems to have fixed the worst of it.

The EX30 didn’t feature in the 2024 Driver Power Top 50 Cars To Own, but the Volvo XC40 did (it finished in 32nd position) and won plaudits for its quality and reliability.

Volvo EX30 FAQs

Yes, the EX30 can use a Tesla Supercharger, but only one of those Superchargers that have been opened up for use by other EV brands. To use one, you’ll have to set up an account with Tesla through that company’s smartphone app.

It depends on which version you get. The basic EX30, with the small lithium-ion phosphate battery, can go for a claimed 218 miles on a charge, and it’s more like 180 miles in the real world. The larger lithium-ion battery can run for a claimed 298 miles, and a real-world 250 miles, in the Single Motor Long Range version of the EX30.

The EX30 is 4,233mm long, 1,836mm wide, and 1,555mm tall.

There is a four-wheel drive version of the EX30, and it’s the Long Range Dual Motor model, which uses two electric motors (obviously, from the name) to drive all four wheels. However, this is the most powerful version of the EX30, with 428hp and the ability to accelerate from 0-62mph in just 3.6 seconds, so it’s hardly the most family-friendly model.

Right now, the EX30 is made in Chengdu in China, but in 2025 production for the UK and Europe switches to Volvo’s factory in Ghent, in Belgium.
