Drag race: Mercedes S-Class vs Mercedes EQS
November 25, 2021 by Ryan Hirons
Whether or not petrol or electric power makes for a better luxury saloon is a debate to be settled — and in today’s case, on the carwow drag strip.
Going head-to-head here is the Mercedes S-Class and Mercedes EQS, both playing flagship roles for their prospective fuel types for the brand.
The former is an S500, meaning it’s powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder engine producing 435hp and 520Nm of torque. That’s sent to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic gearbox.
Meanwhile, this particular Mercedes EQS is a 450+, utilising a single electric motor which kicks out 330hp and 570Nm to the rear wheels.
The electric saloon is pretty porky though as a result of its massive 108kWh, coming in at a total of 2,480kg. It makes the S-Class seem lightweight at 2,065kg.
Will the instant torque of the EQS propel it to first, though? Or will the comparatively more agile Mercedes S500 charge to victory? Well, you’ll need to watch to find out…
