Drag race: Hyundai Ioniq 5 N vs Lamborghini Aventador
July 06, 2024 by Jamie Edkins
Just when you thought the Hyundai Ioniq 5 couldn’t look any more futuristic, along comes the N version. It’s a fantastic-looking thing, and the engineers’ work on the chassis has paid dividends because it’s an absolute riot to drive on a twisty road.
While the focus was never on outright speed, the Ioniq 5 N should still put in a good show on the Carwow drag strip – but can this family-friendly electric SUV really beat a V12-engined Lamborghini down the quarter mile? Let’s take a closer look at the stats.
New Hyundai Ioniq 5 N
Powering the Ioniq 5 N you have two electric motors putting out 650hp and 770Nm of torque, and there’s no gearbox in the way either so acceleration off the line should be rapid.
Being an electric car it is quite heavy, tipping the scales at 2,235kg – which makes the sharp handling an even more impressive feat. It’s also not ludicrously expensive considering the performance you get. You’ll have to part with £65,000.
Lamborghini Aventador SV
That makes it over £170,000 cheaper than this Lamborghini Aventador SV, which costs £238,000. That extra wedge of cash gets you a 6.5-litre naturally-aspirated V12 engine with 750hp and 690Nm of torque, powering all four wheels via a seven-speed robotised manual gearbox.
It’s that transmission which could stand between the Aventador and a victory today, because it’s a clunky unit which makes it difficult to launch properly. This slinky supercar does have weight – or lack of – on its side, coming in at 1,525kg.
So what’s your money on? Will the Lamborghini prove that power is everything, or could the Ioniq 5 N get a good enough launch to clinch victory? You’ll have to watch the video to find out.
