Drag race: Tesla Model X Plaid vs Ferrari 296 GTB vs McLaren 750S

If you wanted to win a traffic light grand prix a decade or two ago, you needed an exotic supercar. That’s not the case these days though, because Tesla will sell you a practical seven-seater which is blisteringly fast.

To find out just how fast, we’ve lined up a Tesla Model X Plaid against a Ferrari 296 GTB and a McLaren 750S to see what happens in a drag race. Let’s take a closer look at the numbers.

Tesla Model X Plaid

Considering this is a family-friendly SUV with seating for seven, the Model X Plaid touts some insane performance figures. It’s powered by three electric motors – one on the front axle and two on the rear.

Combined they put out a whopping 1,020hp and 1,420Nm of torque, which is delivered instantly to all four wheels, so launching it is a piece of cake. It’s a bit of a porker though, weighing in at 2,464kg. Still, it’s considerably cheaper than the other two cars at £127,000.

Ferrari 296 GTS

The Ferrari is over £150,000 more expensive, so what do you get for all that cash? Well it’s powered by a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 which is mated to an electric motor, and combined they put out 830hp and 740Nm of torque.

This is sent to the rear wheels only via an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox. So far you may be thinking that the Ferrari is on the back foot, but it’s over 700kg lighter than the Tesla – tipping the scales at 1,540kg dry, so it’ll be around 1,700kg once you account for all the fluids.

McLaren 750S

Finally then, let’s see what the McLaren has to offer for its £254,000 price tag. In the middle is a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine with no electrification at all, it delivers 750hp and 800Nm of torque all by itself.

This is sent to the rear wheels only via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, and it’s the lightest car here by a long way. At just 1,389kg it’s around 300kg lighter than the Ferrari and it’s over a tonne lighter than the Model X.
