Drag race: tuned BMW M3 vs Porsche 911 Turbo S
May 30, 2023 by Jamie Edkins
Mat’s behind the wheel of the Porsche 911 Turbo S today. It’s a bit of a carwow drag race favourite thanks to its ability to launch perfectly every time without fail. Slung out over the rear wheels is a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six engine with 650hp and 800Nm of torque, powering all four wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. It’s the lighter of the two cars here as well, tipping the scales at 1,640kg. The 911 Turbo S will also make a £180,000 hole in your wallet.
That’s a lot more expensive than the BMW M3 Competition. It starts from £84,070, although this car has around £8,000 worth of mods fitted to it bringing the price up to £90,070. As standard the 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged straight-six puts out 510hp and 650Nm of torque, however a tune and some bolt-on performance parts has upped this to 750hp and 900Nm of torque. There’s no real weight penalty for this, with the M3 coming in at the same 1,780kg as the standard car. This is the all-wheel-drive version of the M3 as well, and it has an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
So will these performance upgrades be enough to de-throne the Turbo S, or will Stuttgart’s finest manage to stay ahead? You’ll have to watch the video to find out.
