About Mazda

Mazda was founded as long ago as 1920. The company started out making cork, would you believe, before building its first vehicle in 1931.

In its long history, Mazda has been known for its innovative technologies and willingness to do things differently. The company famously championed the rotary engine long after it had been abandoned or ignored by almost every other car maker.

Mazda has been successful on the track and on road, winning the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1991 with the rotary-powered 787B. The MX-5 is Mazda’s most famous road car, with more than a million of this front-engined, rear-wheel-drive sports car sold over four generations.

After being part-owned by Ford for many years, Mazda is once again an independent company. It has been slow to shift towards electric vehicles, but now sells pure EVs alongside hybrids, petrols, and diesels.

What our car expert says

“Plenty of hot hatches are quicker than the Mazda MX-5, but that’s missing the point. It’s not about what the MX-5 does, it’s the way it does it. Simple, pure, involving – the Mazda is the kind of sports car hardly anyone else makes anymore.”

Mazda FAQs

Mazda is that rare thing these days – an independent car company that’s not part of a huge group. Toyota has a small stake, and some large Japanese banks also part-own Mazda.
Mazda builds in Hiroshima, Japan. There’s also a manufacturing facility in Yamaguchi. Internationally, Mazda has factories in Mexico and the United States.
Yes. Mazda’s weakest models are still pretty good. The best Mazda cars are excellent.
Yes, Mazda cars are worth buying. Today’s range has wowscores of 6/10 to 9/10. The best model in the Mazda range is the MX-5 sports car, which is great fun to drive and superb value.
Both make good cars. Toyota has Mazda beaten for reliability and offers a longer warranty, although Mazda cars are still reliable compared with most alternatives. Arguably Mazda builds more stylish cars. To choose between the two, read the Carwow reviews of the cars on your shortlist and take test drives to pin-down your decision.
