About OMODA
Believe it or not, the Omoda name is meant to represent two things. The first O is meant to stand for Oxygen, while the ‘Moda’ bit is meant to represent modernity, as it’s the Italian word for fashion. We can’t help but think that Oxygen Fashion would be a better name for a car brand. Or maybe the name of a band playing one of the small stages at Glastonbury…
Never mind the name, though, as Omoda is another of the new Chinese brands arriving in the UK with big ambitions. It wants to nick sales from familiar Japanese and Korean brands, and it’s starting off with the Omoda 5.
The Omoda 5 is a medium-sized family SUV which comes in both petrol and electric forms, and the E5 electric version goes for a claimed 257 miles on one charge.
More models will follow, as Omoda already has on sale in China both a larger SUV (the Omoda C9) and compact saloons (the Omoda S5 and O5), along with plans for smaller, more affordable models. There’s also the related Jaecoo brand, which is in theory a little more upmarket.
Omoda, like most Chinese car brands, is aiming to offer good value for money, with lots of standard equipment for a low-ish price. While it does that, right now the Omoda 5 doesn’t have the quality nor the driving experience to match the best European, Japanese, and Korean opposition.
In the future, though? Chery — Omoda’s owner — is an enormous company with huge engineering and design resources, so don’t bet against it just yet.
What our car expert says
“The Omoda 5 lacks a bit of polish compared to the best SUVs, but maybe all that standard equipment will sweeten the deal.”
