About GWM Ora

Ora is actually a part of the vast Great Wall Motors company, one of China’s biggest car making conglomerates. Ora was set up as a brand that would make electric cars which are slightly more cheeky and retro in their style than the norm, hence the little Ora 03 hatchback, originally named the Funky Cat, which looks like a classic VW Beetle was passed through a time machine.

The brand hasn’t really taken off in the UK nor Europe just yet, hence the recent rebranding to become GWM Ora (the GWM standing for Great Wall Motors) and the re-badging of the Funky Cat as the Ora 03.

The brand’s next model will be the Ora 07, which was originally going to be called the Lightning Cat. It’s a bigger, four-door saloon with a long range between charges, and which looks slightly like a Porsche Panamera crossed with a Beluga Whale. Ora can potentially draw on huge numbers of other models from Great Wall’s selection of Chinese brands, including chunky SUVs under the Tank brand, but it’s still a company that’s working out what it needs to do to thrive in the UK.

Ora makes cars with tempting prices, and excellent standard equipment for their price, but the 03’s range on one charge isn’t great in the real world, and the infotainment and driver warning systems are dreadful, which is maybe why the brand still hasn’t quite chimed with British buyers.

What our car expert says

“The GWM Ora 03 is nice inside and comfortable, but if you regularly do longer journeys its range might put you off.”

GWM Ora FAQs

According to Ora’s claim, the name stands for ‘open, reliable and alternative.’

Ora is part of the Great Wall Motors group, a huge Chinese car maker that also includes the Havel and Tank brands.

Ora models are made in China and Thailand.

It’s a bit of a mixed bag at the moment. The Ora 03 is affordable, well-equipped, and not bad to drive, but its real-world range isn’t great and it has a woefully fiddly infotainment system.
