About Lotus

Some of the most iconic sports cars of all time. Multiple Formula One world titles. And a stint as James Bond’s company car. What else is there to say about Lotus?

These days, Lotus is part of the vast Geely Group, a Chinese car maker that also owns Volvo, Polestar, and the company that makes London Taxis. Under Geely, Lotus has been moving beyond its traditional lightweight sports car heritage — although it does still make the gorgeous Emira V6 and turbo-four-cylinder mid-engined sports car — and branching out into bigger, all-electric models such as the Emeya saloon and the Eletre SUV. There’s also the limited-run 2,000hp Evija electric hypercar.

Lotus has an almost-unbeatable history — it’s still won more F1 constructor’s titles than Red Bull, in spite of not having been in F1 since the early 1990s — and cars like the Emira, though flawed, draw deeply on that heritage.

What our car expert says

“The Emira has the Lotus magic of its old cars, and is perfectly usable day-to-day as any good sports car should be.”

Lotus FAQs

Lotus is these days part of the Geely Group, a Chinese car maker which also owns Volvo, Polestar, and Proton amongst others.

The big electric models — the Lotus Eletre and Emeya — are made in China, while the Emira sports car and Evija hypercar are made in Lotus’ traditional home of Norfolk.

Yes, they are. The old Lots Of Trouble, Usually Serious days are long gone, and while the Emira can’t match Porsche nor Mercedes for quality, it’s enormously good fun to drive. The Eletre and Emeya are very close to the big German brands in quality terms.

Yes-ish. Certainly, Lotus cars are far more reliable now than they were in the 1980s and 1990s, but they’re still not up to Porsche standards.

No — the Eletre, Emeya, and Evjia are fully-electric, but the Emira comes with a choice of V6 (Toyota) or four-cylinder turbo (Mercedes-AMG) petrol engines.
