About DS

DS was originally a part of Citroen. The name comes from the original 1955 Citroen DS saloon — one of the most significant of all cars in the 20th Century — and was revived as a badge for posh Citroens in 2009, including the DS3, DS4, and DS5

In 2014, DS was spun off as its own brand, an attempt to make a French rival to the likes of BMW and Audi

Right now, DS makes mostly SUVs, large and small — the compact DS3, the mid-sized DS4, and the Audi Q5-sized DS7. There is a big, comfy saloon too — the DS9. Both the DS4 and DS7 can be had with petrol, diesel, or plug-in hybrid power, while the DS9 is plug-in only, and the DS3 comes with the option of a fully-electric E-Tense version.

We love DS’s quirky style and sense of comfort, but it’s a brand that needs to move further away from its Citroen and Peugeot roots if it’s to be taken seriously as an Audi alternative.

What our car expert says

“If you’re set on a DS4 then you’ll love its quirkiness, however, German alternatives are far better to drive”

DS FAQs

DS is part of the huge Stellantis Group, which also includes Citroen, Peugeot, Vauxhall, Fiat, Jeep, Alfa Romeo and many more.
They should be. No DS models featured in the Driver Power Top 50 Cars To Own list, and nor were there enough responses from DS owners for the brand to get a place in the owners’ satisfaction survey of the top 32 makes — however, all DS models share all of their mechanical components with Citroen and Peugeot, both of which had models in the top ten of the Top 50, and Peugeot and Citroen finished 6th and 5th, respectively, in the brands list, so the omens are very good for DS.
DS builds most of its cars in Europe, with two plants in France — Poissy and Mulhouse — and one in Germany — Russelsheim, shared with Opel and Vauxhall. There is also a factory in Shenzhen, China which makes the DS7 for the Chinese market, and the DS9 for all global markets.
DS doesn’t strictly speaking stand for anything — its name comes from the older Citroen tradition of giving cars a two-letter name, such as CX, AX, XM, SM and so on. However, when you pronounce the letters DS in French, you make the sound of déesse (day-ess), which translates as Goddess, and which became the nickname for the original DS saloon.
Broadly speaking, yes — DS makes luxury cars. Even the little DS3 can be had with expensive-feeling quilted leather, just like a Bentley, while the cabin of some DS7 models looks like the aftermath of an explosion in a suede factory. However, the current lineup still has too many obvious Citroen, Peugeot, and Vauxhall bits and pieces to be taken truly seriously as luxury models.
