About Alpine

The Alpine badge dates back to 1955, when the company was founded by rally driver Jean Rédélé, who named it after his favourite mountain driving roads. It became famous in the 1970s as a World Rally Championship winner with the original, and gorgeous, A110 sports car, and later started to make higher-performance, Porsche-bothering sports cars with Renault engines and badges, such as the A610 and GTA Turbo, before it died off in the 1990s.

More recently, Alpine has been revived as Renault’s Formula One and Le Mans team, and as the maker of the gorgeous, brilliant A110 sports car, named after its 1970s forebear.

Now, Alpine is branching out into electric cars, and it will shortly become an all-electric brand. That starts with the A290 — a sportier version of Renault’s new electric Renault 5 hatchback — and will be followed up by a family friendly low-roofed SUV called the A390, and an all-electric replacement for the A110 sports car.

What our car expert says

“As exciting as bungee jumping from the Eiffel Tower, the Alpine A110 is a quirky French take on delivering pure driving joy.”

Alpine FAQs

Alpine cars are made by Renault, which has owned the brand since 1976.

Yes — while there have been some reliability issues for the Alpine A110, that’s made up for by the brilliant driving experience. Alpine is one of the few car makers that can challenge Porsche for driving fun in the sports car segment.

Traditionally, Alpine’s factory is in the French seaside town of Dieppe, and that’s where the A110 is made. The electric Alpine A290 hatchback is made in the same factory as the Renault 5, in Douai, near the city of Lilles.
