About Jeep

Jeep ran a really clever advert a few years back when Land Rover celebrated a big anniversary. “Happy birthday junior” was the tagline.

You see, the prototype Jeep 4x4 appeared eight years before the first Land Rover dirtied its tyres. The Willys Jeep, as it became, was produced in huge numbers throughout World War II.

Post-war, the Jeep range developed and diversified to include more comfortable SUVs such as the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee.

Today, Jeep is one of the many automotive brands owned by the Stellantis group. You can still buy a rugged off-roader in the form of the Wrangler, alongside plug-in hybrids like the Grand Cherokee 4xe and electric cars like the Avenger.

What our car expert says

“For years, the Jeep Wrangler has been one of the best SUVs for drivers who spend as much time off road as on it. The Wrangler is characterful and well equipped, but it can’t match the Land Rover Defender’s all-round appeal.”

Jeep FAQs

Jeep is one of the 14 car companies that make up the Stellantis group. This large multinational automotive company is owned by its shareholders.
Good question. You get different answers depending on who you ask. One explanation is that the original Jeep came from the military designation, General Purpose. This was commonly shortened to ‘GP’, which was gradually slurred into the word Jeep. An alternative theory is that servicemen likened the car to Eugene the Jeep, a character in the Popeye comic strip.
Don’t expect a trouble-free ownership experience. Jeep doesn’t perform all that well in reliability and owner satisfaction surveys.  There’s a good chance the Avenger EV is more reliable than most other Jeep models, as electric cars tend to be more dependable than cars with internal combustion engines.
The likes of the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee are very good off road. If you are looking for an all-rounder, though, you can buy better.
