About Kia cars

Kia almost disappeared completely in 1997. The company filed for bankruptcy but was rescued by the Hyundai Motor Group in 1998.

But we’re jumping ahead. Kia was founded in 1944 – it actually made steel tubing and bicycles before switching to motorcycles, trucks, and then cars.

In the 1990s, Kia made rebadged Fords under licence, before almost going under in the Asian financial crisis.

Kia has grown enormously as part of the Hyundai Motor Group, selling more than three-million cars globally in 2023.

Hatchbacks and SUVs are staples of the Kia range, with many models offered with hybrid or fully electric power. A new generation of electric models, such as the EV3 and EV9, is accelerating Kia’s transition to an EV-focused car maker.

What our car expert says

“Kia is playing with the big boys! The new EV9 is one of the best electric cars you can buy. Yes, it’s expensive, but it’s super-practical and very stylish. It’s a good example of how the Kia range keeps getting better and better.”

Kia FAQs

Kia isn’t an acronym. The Kia name comes from a Sino-Korean character meaning “to arise”, and another meaning “Asia”. So roughly translated, Kia means “rising from Asia”.
Kia is part of the Hyundai Motor Group after it was bought by Hyundai in 1998. The two companies share many components and technologies but operate independently. Think of it as sibling rivalry…
Kia is a South Korean car brand. Its HQ is in Seoul, the South Korean capital.
There are many Kia car factories all over the world. There are 14 manufacturing facilities in eight different countries. Many of the cars sold in the UK are built at Korea’s factory in Slovakia.

The company has design centres in Korea, China, Germany, and the USA.

Yes. Kia is usually in the top half of reliability and owner satisfaction surveys. There are some differences from model to model as you might expect, but generally a Kia is a sound buy if you want trouble-free driving.

Owners also benefit from Kia’s seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty. That’s one of the longest-lasting warranty packages offered by any car maker in the UK.
