About Renault

Renault is one of the world’s oldest car companies. It was founded in 1899 by the Renault brothers, Louis, Marcel, and Fernand.

After the death of Louis Renault in 1945, the company was nationalised by President Charles de Gaulle. Over the next few decades Renault produced some distinctive cars, including the beautiful Renault Dauphine and the ruggedly practical Renault 4. Renault was privatised in 1996 and formed an alliance with Nissan in 1999 to share technology and reduce costs.

Today, Renault offers many hybrid and fully electric models. The Clio is one of the best small cars on sale, while the new Symbioz shows off Renault’s design flair.

What our car expert says

“Renault has been quick to add hybrids and electric cars to its line-up. The Scenic E-Tech is only offered with electric power. The range of the big-battery model is excellent, but it’s a bit weird to drive and the interior feels cheap in places.”

Renault FAQs

Renault is owned by its shareholders. These include the French government, Renault’s employees, and Nissan.
As a French car company, Renault still proudly produces cars at its plants in Flins and Sandouville. It also has many factories in countries across the globe, including Argentina, Brazil, China, and India.
Renault doesn’t often finish near the top of reliability studies, but it’s not buried at the bottom either. Problems aren’t uncommon but they’re more likely to be niggling irritations than the kind of problem that leaves you stranded on the hard shoulder.
Yes, Renault builds good cars. The Clio supermini is our pick of the range, with a wowscore of 9/10, but the Austral, Captur and Megane E-Tech are almost as good, scoring 8/10.
