About Abarth

Abarth is a brand steeped in racing and rallying history, having been founded by Italian-Austrian racer Carl Abarth in 1949. It first became famous for making racing versions of the original Fiat 500. 

Today, Abarth makes hot versions of the Fiat 500e and 600e electric cars, giving them sportier styling, suspension, and steering and more powerful electric motors, although you can still buy a petrol-powered Abarth, the 595 and 696 models, which are based on the older Fiat 500. 

Abarth’s future is as the performance brand of Fiat, making hotter versions of Fiat’s future all-electric lineup, assuming that it remains successful enough in convincing car enthusiasts that EVs can become fun hot hatchbacks. 

Abarth has been a brilliant addition to the Fiat lineup over the past two decades, creating some seriously enjoyable hot 500s. How it handles the transition to electric power will be crucial to its future, and so far the results are mixed.

Abarth has been owned by Fiat since 1971, and has been Fiat’s high-performance and motor racing brand ever since. It’s now part of the Stellantis Group, which also includes Peugeot, Citroen, Jeep, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Vauxhall, and others. 
Yes — Abarth takes a basic Fiat and makes them noisy (if you’re buying petrol power) and fun (petrol or electric). They look great, go quickly, and are fun to drive. 
Most Abarths are made in Poland, as the petrol-powered Fiat 500 and the petrol and electric Fiat 600 are made at Fiat’s factory in Tychy. Abarth models roll down the same production line. The exception is the electric Fiat 500e, of which there is an Abarth version, which is made in Turin.
Effectively, yes. Carl Abarth made a name for himself tuning and racing various Fiat models in the 1950s and 1960s, and in 1971, Fiat bought the Abarth brand, turning it into the company’s competition and racing badge. It’s been a part of Fiat ever since. 
No. Although Abarth models have more upmarket interiors than the Fiat’s they’re based on — more leather, more suede, sports seats etc — Abarth’s focus is on sportiness and driving fun, not on luxury.
