About Peugeot

Peugeot was founded all the way back in 1810, decades before the car was invented. Believe it or not, Peugeot made saws, hand tools, and coffee grinders before it moved onto vehicles. Bicycles and steam-powered trikes were made before the first four-wheeled Peugeot car was produced in 1890.

Books can (and have been) written about the history of Peugeot, so we’ll spool on a bit to the 1970s, when Peugeot took over Citroën. More recent mergers led to the formation of Stellantis, a huge group of 14 car brands including Peugeot.

The current Peugeot range starts with superminis and goes up to large SUVs and MPVs. There’s a strong emphasis on hybrid and electric power. Peugeot expects its European line-up to be 100% electric by 2030.

The reliability of Peugeot models has improved in recent years. Even so, Peugeot doesn’t tend to challenge for a podium spot in reliability and customer satisfaction surveys. Generally, it finishes towards the middle or in the bottom half of such studies. Electric cars are generally more reliable than petrols and diesels, so an electric Peugeot should prove durable.
Yes, most Peugeot models are worth it for the right kind of buyer. Some models, like the e-Rifter, major on practicality. Others, such as the 408, are all about style. If a Peugeot suits your needs and priorities then it makes a good buy.
Cheap? It really depends which cars you compare to Peugeot. Next to an Audi or BMW a Peugeot may appear cheap, but a Peugeot is generally more expensive than the equivalent Citroën or Dacia. If you are considering one of Peugeot’s EVs, you’ll typically find that Chinese-made alternatives are cheaper to buy.
If space for people matters more than anything else, then the e-Traveller MPV is best. For town driving, the 208 and e-208 make most sense. For turning heads, choose the 408. The 308 is comfortable and stylish. It really depends what you are looking for, but as an all-rounder the 308 SW estate can make a strong case for being the best Peugeot.
