About Audi cars

Audi is an upmarket German car company, known for its premium quality and stylish design.

Since 1966, Audi has been a subsidiary of Volkswagen. This was the start of Audi as we know it, but the company goes all the way back to 1909. Auto Union, which later merged with Audi, was founded in 1932.

Fast forward to today, and Audi has one of the most diverse model line ups of any car company. From hatchbacks to SUVs to sports cars, via every niche in between, Audi sells cars to meet most needs, although you’ll need a healthy bank balance to afford a new one.

Audi sells electric cars under the ‘e-tron’ name, and all its new models are planned to be electric from 2026 onwards.

What our car expert says

“Audi builds so many different models it’s enough to make your head spin. It’s worth getting to grips with the range, though – most Audi cars are among the best of their kind.”

Audi FAQs

Audi is part of the Volkswagen Group and has been since 1966. It’s the group’s main prestige brand, sitting above Volkswagen but below Bentley in the pecking order.
The two factories in Germany, in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm. Audi also has production facilities in Belgium, Hungary, and Mexico.
Audi doesn’t tend to perform as well in reliability and owner satisfaction surveys as the likes of Lexus. That’s not to say that Audi doesn’t make cars that are generally reliable, but some other makes are less likely to develop the odd fault.

From new, an Audi comes with a three-year, 60,000-mile warranty. The length of cover can be extended at extra cost for more peace of mind.

Audi is a premium brand so, yes, its cars are quite pricey. You’ll pay more for an Audi than a Seat or Volkswagen, even if the cars share many parts underneath.

That said, an Audi will generally be less expensive to buy than the equivalent Mercedes-Benz.

You also need to take account of resale values to work out the whole life cost. Most Audi models are in strong demand on the used market, so you’ll get back a sizeable chunk of the original price when you sell on your Audi.
