About Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi’s history as a car maker dates back much further than you might think, as it began its four-wheeled journey in 1917, with a licence-built copy of a Fiat Tipo 3.

The brand first came to the UK in 1974 as the Colt Car Company, selling cars under that badge before rebranding as Mitsubishi in 1984. While the company sold plenty of humble family cars over the years — from various versions of the Colt to the Carisma and the Galant — it also sold some serious enthusiast cars, including the 1980s Starion coupe and the 1990s Evo models, based on Mitsubishi’s hugely successful rally cars.

It was also one of the first car makers to embrace the idea of a plug-in hybrid, with the half-petrol, half-electric Outlander going on sale as far back as 2013.

As with many car makers, Mitsubishi has focused more recently on SUVs than on hatchbacks and saloons, so there are plenty of compact ASX models and the slightly sporty Eclipse Cross around, as well as the rugged L200 pickup and the chunky Shogun SUV.

Will Mitsubishi ever come back to the UK? It seems unlikely, and we really will miss it, especially with those rose-tinted Evo memories, but at least we still have a broad lineup of used cars to choose from.

What our car expert says

“The Eclipse Cross was a significant step forward for Mitsubishi but still was not quite as well rounded as some more upmarket alternatives.”

Mitsubishi FAQs

Mitsubishi the car brand was and is part of the bigger Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (which makes everything from air conditioners to hand dryers to aeroplanes) but since 2016, Nissan has owned a majority stake in the company.

Generally speaking, yes. There were some problems with specific models, such as the early-2000s Colt hatchback, but in the main Mitsubishi makes very reliable cars.

By the time Mitsubishi left the UK market, its model lineup was becoming a bit left behind. The Outlander was out of date. The small Mirage felt cheap and nasty. The Eclipse Sport looked good but failed to inspire. They’re all solid, reliable machines with plenty of practicality, but the excitement of the Evo and Galant era had passed.

All over the world. In Japan, Mitsubishi’s home country, but also in Thailand, the US, and Australia at various times.
