About Bentley

Bentley was founded by W.O. Bentley in 1919 and became famous for winning the Le Mans 24-hour race five times between 1924 and 1930.

Despite success in the track, Bentley entered receivership in 1931. The company was bought by another famous name, Rolls-Royce. Bentley was under the ownership of Rolls-Royce and later Vickers until 1998, when it became part of the Volkswagen Group.

Having started out in Cricklewood, North London, today Bentley is based in Crewe, Cheshire.

Today’s range includes coupes, convertibles, saloons and SUVs, with hybrid power in some models. Bentley is expected to launch its first all-electric model by the end of 2026.

What our car expert says

“Nobody combines luxury and performance better than Bentley. If you want to go a long way, quickly and in great comfort, a Bentley is the car for the job. Such quality and prestige doesn’t come cheap, though.”

Bentley FAQs

Bentley is owned by the Volkswagen Group and has been since 1998. Before that it was part of Rolls-Royce and then Vickers, having been an independent company from 1919 to 1931.
In the early days the cars were made in Cricklewood in London, before production moved to Derby under Rolls-Royce’s ownership. Bentley is now based in Crewe, Cheshire. It might seem like sacrilege, but a few Bentleys have been built in Germany.
An awful lot. For example, the Bentayga SUV costs upwards of £150,000. Under the skin it’s closely related to the Volkswagen Touareg, which starts from around £70,000.
Luxury doesn’t come cheap. The standard of materials is a cut above what you’d find in an Audi or Volkswagen. Bentley also offers a level of personalisation that you won’t find from most other brands.

You are paying a lot for the heritage of the Bentley name and for exclusivity. There are more affordable cars that will do the same job as a Bentley, but will they do it with the same sense of style?

Cheap? Bentley! There isn’t a cheap Bentley. But if you don’t want to make a large dent in your investment portfolio, the most modestly priced Bentley is the Bentayga SUV.
Bentley stopped racing at Le Mans almost a century ago because the company felt it had proven that its cars were fast and durable (although Bentley returned to win again in 2003). Nowadays Bentley cars use the same parts as Audi and Volkswagen models. While reliability may not be perfect, most of the major components are robust and well proven.
Not better, different. For many years Bentleys were rebadged Rolls-Royce models, but that close relationship is in the past. Today’s Bentleys are more sporty than a Rolls-Royce, very comfortable and refined but with more driver appeal than a Rolls. If you want the ultimate in luxury, however, Rolls-Royce is hard to beat.
