About Citroën
Citroën is one of the most famous names in the French motor industry. Over the past 100 years and more, Citroën has been responsible for some of the most innovative and recognisable cars ever made.
The company was founded in 1919 by André Citroën. In 1934, Citroën released the first mass-produced front-wheel-drive car, the Traction Avant. The iconic 2CV arrived in 1948, then in 1954 Citroën introduced the first hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension system. The DS arrived a year later, and some 70 years on it is still widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cars ever made.
Sadly, technical innovation doesn’t always lead to healthy profits, and by the 1970s Citroën was struggling financially. In 1976, Citroën was saved by a merger with Peugeot. Today, both Peugeot and Citroën are part of the huge Stellantis group of car companies, and Citroen has returned to its roots, making individual cars that stand out from the norm.
What our car expert says
“The best Citroën cars are hard to pigeonhole. Take the C5 X. It’s part estate, part SUV, and part hatchback. Why drive something bland and boring when you can own a car like this?”
