About Fiat

Fiat is Italy’s oldest car maker. It can trace its history all the way back to 1899, with the company’s first factory opening one year later. In case you were wondering, the Fiat name stands for Fabbrica Italiana di Automobili Torino (or ‘Italian car factory Turin’ in English).

There have been good and bad times over the past 120 years and more, along with notable classics like the original Fiat 500, the 124 Spider, and the Dino with its Ferrari engine. The twists and turns of Fiat’s history would fill a hefty book, so let’s skip ahead to today when Fiat is part of the Stellantis group of car companies - the same group as Peugeot, Citroen, and Vauxhall.

For decades, Fiat has been well known for its small cars, and now it builds the 500 family, the 600, and the Grande Panda. Fiat has shifted quickly to embrace hybrid and fully electric cars.

Fiat also does a thriving trade in commercial vehicles - selling the Ducato, the Scudo and the Doblo panel vans. The Ducato in particular is one of Europe’s most enduring large vans - not to mention the basis for over three-quarters of motorhome builds.

What our car expert says

“Nobody does cute small cars quite as well as Fiat. The 500e is the core of Fiat’s range, with retro-futuristic styling and nippy performance. It is very small, though – you can buy more practical electric cars for the same money or less.”

Fiat FAQs

Fiat is now part of Stellantis, a huge group of car companies based in Europe and the USA. Stellantis is a publicly traded company, owned by its shareholders.
Fiat stands for Fabbrica Italiana di Automobili Torino. In English, that means ‘Italian Car Factory of Turin’.
As a rule, Fiat isn’t thought of as an especially reliable car maker. That’s largely an outdated view, given that today’s range usually finishes mid-table in reliability surveys. Electric cars are generally more reliable than petrols and diesels, so an all-electric Fiat should make a dependable buy.
Fiat still builds cars in its hometown of Turin, Italy. The company has factories elsewhere as well, including Argentina, Mexico, and Poland.
