About MINI

Before there was MINI, there was the Mini. The original launched in 1959 and was on sale for more than 40 years, becoming a motoring icon in the process.

After a short hiatus, the MINI name reappeared in 2001 after the brand was bought by BMW. The new MINI hatchback was much bigger and more advanced than the original, but still great fun to drive.

One model quickly became a whole range, with some models more ‘maxi’ than ‘mini’. But even the larger and more practical MINI cars are typically more stylish than the alternatives.

MINI has embraced electrification, with several all-electric models. Production of MINI’s internal combustion engine models is expected to end by 2030.

What our car expert says

“There’s now a range of MINI models, including SUVs and convertibles. The hatchback remains the core of the brand, though. It’s fun and stylish, but not the most practical small car.”

MINI FAQs

MINI is now owned by BMW and has been since 2001. So, although you’ll spot lots of Union Jack motifs on the cars, they’re arguably as German as they are British.
The money behind MINI may be German, but the cars are still assembled in Britain at Cowley in Oxfordshire. There’s also the Hams Hall plant near Birmingham which builds MINI engines, and a factory in Swindon which makes parts for the body shells. Some other parts do come from Germany, though.
These days cars are designed by teams rather than one gifted individual. But the original Mini was the brainchild of the brilliant Alec Issigonis. His Mini’s front-wheel drive, transverse engine, and space-efficient design set the template for the modern small hatchback.
Yes, MINIs are reliable. You can never be certain that any car will be fault-free, but the modern range performs well in reliability and owner satisfaction surveys. Buy with confidence but be aware that there are alternatives with longer standard warranties.
Yes, a MINI makes a good first car, so long as you can afford to buy and insure one. The current MINI Hatch starts from insurance group 21 of 50, which will make for pricey cover for a young driver. If you are looking at a used example of the previous generation, then insurance starts from group 11, so the annual premium will be less expensive. Safety ratings are okay rather than great, with a four-star score from Euro NCAP when the MINI Cooper was tested in 2014.
