About Skoda

Skoda has its roots in the former Czechoslovakia - now Czechia - as an arms manufacturer, beginning way back in 1859. Separately in 1895, a firm called Laurin & Klement started manufacturing bicycles, then moved onto motorcycles and eventually car production in 1905. In 1925, Laurin & Klement was acquired by Skoda Works, and the new company was named Skoda Auto.

From 1948, Skoda became part of the communist planned economy in Czechoslovakia, and technical development stalled as a result. Right up until the 1980s, Skoda was known in Europe for building dated but inexpensive models, and had something of a joke reputation - why do Skodas have heated rear windows? To keep your hands warm while you’re pushing it!

After the fall of communism and acquisition by the Volkswagen Group in 1990, Skoda began to shake off its former reputation with a series of modern new cars. Utilising Volkswagen’s parts bin, Skoda’s been able to produce everything from fairly basic hatchbacks right up to the weird and wonderful, like the ever-popular Yeti.

Skoda’s model line-up today includes some of our favourite cars on sale - the brilliant Octavia Estate, the excellent Kodiaq family SUV and the impressive Enyaq electric car. More electric models are on the way, so Skoda’s future looks pretty bright.

What our car expert says

“Skoda’s long past being a joke brand - it builds great cars, often as good as the Volkswagens they’re based on but for less money. The Octavia, Superb and Kodiaq in particular aren’t just good for the money, they’re great cars full stop.”

Skoda cars FAQs

Since 1990 Skoda’s been owned by the Volkswagen Group - the corporate giant that also owns SEAT, Audi and Porsche, among other brands. Skoda’s CEO is Klaus Zellmer.
Skoda has its roots in Czechoslovakia - now Czechia - and still has factories there as well as facilities in Slovakia, India, and China.
Skoda builds its cars in several countries, in facilities shared with other Volkswagen Group brands. Cars for Europe are mainly built in Czechia and Slovakia, while India and China produce cars for their vast local markets.
Skoda engines are shared with other cars within the Volkswagen Group - so you’ll find the same engines in the Octavia as you would in the Volkswagen Golf or SEAT Leon, for example.
Skoda performs very highly in owner satisfaction surveys - usually higher than its sister brands Volkswagen, SEAT and Audi. That’s usually a good indication of reliable cars, as well as excellent customer service from the dealer network.
We rate most Skodas extremely highly - the majority of its cars are rated 8 and 9 out of 10 by our team of trusted reviewers
vRS stands for ‘Victory Rally Sport’ and points to Skoda’s success over 45 years of motorsport, particularly rallying. It’s a badge applied to the brand’s most powerful cars.
