About SsangYong

Ssangyong is older than you’d think — it only came to the UK in 1991, but it’s been making cars (originally as the Ha Dong-hwan Motor Workshop and Dongbang Motor Co, which both later merged) since 1954, originally making Jeeps for the US Army. The Ssangyong name came on the scene in 1986.

Ssangyong only makes SUVs (and one MPV, the infamous Rodius, often thought of as the ugliest car ever made), and has found success with cheap and cheerful cars such as the Tivoli, the Rexton, and the Korando

In 2023, Ssangyong, having gone through a few different owners (including India’s Mahindra Group) was bought out by a massive Korean company, The KG Group, which rebranded the car maker as KGM Motors. It’s starting to introduce all-electric cars now, using BYD batteries from China.

Ssangyong has never been one of the most desirable car brands around, but if you’re looking for cheap, tough, and useful SUVs, look no further. If you’re looking for comfort, performance, and sophistication… keep searching.

What our car expert says

“The SsangYong Korando looks bolder than ever on the outside, but it sticks to SsangYong’s tried-and-tested formula of being big on practicality, yet small on price.”

SsangYong FAQs

Ssangyong has had lots of owners — starting out as part of the SsangYong Group, being taken over by fellow South Korean brand Daewoo, then being sold to Indian car maker Mahindra, and now being part of South Korean group KG.
All of Ssangyong’s model lineup is made in one massive factory in Pyeongtaek, South Korea. It’s in the north-west of South Korea, just near Seoul.
Ssangyongs are good if what you’re looking for is lots of metal for your money, and plenty of utility. They’re not great if you’re looking for comfort or sophistication.
Ssangyong didn’t feature in the most recent Driver Power survey, but in general the brand has a decent reputation for reliability, and it’s especially popular in rural areas, where the cars are often used for farming work, which is a good sign of longevity.
