About Subaru

Subaru is best known to Brits as the maker of those glorious blue-and-gold Impreza rally cars of the 1990s, as so famously rallied by Colin McRae and Richard Burns. It has a much longer history than that, of course, and started making cars as far back as the 1950s.

Subaru only makes SUVs — the Crosstrek (formerly the XV), Forester, Solterra, and Outback (which is more of a tall estate). They’re powered by a mixture of petrol and hybrid engines, except for the Solterra, which is all-electric.

In the immediate future, Subaru will introduce a new hybrid-engined Forester, and a new Outback, which shrugs off the estate car look in favour of a taller, blockier SUV style. Beyond that, the company has to start getting serious about electric power.

Subaru has sadly lost the thrilling edge it once had, back in the rallying Impreza days, but it still makes reliable, sensible, useful (if thirsty) family SUVs with some serious off-road prowess.

What our car expert says

“Like wearing wellies, the Subaru Forester is pretty capable in rough stuff - but there are many other options for day-to-day life.”

Subaru FAQs

Subaru is — as it has been since the 1950s — part of the Fuji Heavy Industries group, which also makes aeroplanes and helicopters. Toyota owns a minority stake in Subaru and the two companies share some technology.
Partly so, yes. Subaru has one of the best reputations around when it comes to reliability and solidity, but the service intervals for some models — notably the Outback and the Solterra — are shorter than those of alternative cars, with the Solterra needing a service every 9,000 miles and the Outback every 6,000 miles.
Yes, definitely. In fact, Subaru beat all-comers to take the top spot in the most recent Driver Power customer satisfaction survey in the UK.
