About Vauxhall
Vauxhall is one of the best-selling car makers in Britain and has been for decades. Vauxhall began making cars in 1903, but the company goes all the way back to 1857 when it started out making pumps and marine engines.
As long ago as 1925, Vauxhall became part of the huge US car maker, General Motors. By the 1980s, Vauxhalls were almost identical to Opel models, with Vauxhall effectively the UK brand name for Opel designs.
In 2017, Vauxhall (and Opel) were sold to the French PSA Group, which has since merged with Fiat to form Stellantis. Vauxhall’s current range shares parts and technology with Peugeot, so the current Astra is very similar to the Peugeot 308, for example.
A growing number of Vauxhall models are either hybrid or fully electric, and the range will be electric-only from 2028 if Vauxhall hits its own target.
What our car expert says
“Don’t dismiss the Vauxhall Astra! It’s not as much fun as a Ford Focus or as classy as a VW Golf, but it looks snazzy and has a big boot. The Astra is a really good hatchback that deserves more recognition.”
