Used Alfa Romeo cars overview

Alfa Romeo is the brand that car-nuts love to love, and which most other people just kind of ignore. Certainly, all of Alfa Romeo’s models are big on Italian style, but they’re also short of Toyota-esque quality, so buy used ones with care.

Popular used Alfa Romeo models

Used Alfa Romeo Tonale

The Tonale has been a popular new car for Alfa Romeo since it was launched in 2023, not least because it gave business user-choosers the option of a plug-in hybrid engine. The PHEV Tonale isn’t great to drive, though, as it’s too heavy and the switch between petrol and electric power is too abrupt. You’d be better off with the 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol. It’s too early to tell how reliable the Tonale will be, but many of the early cars had small, but annoying, quality glitches so don’t buy anything without a full service history.

Used Alfa Romeo Giulia

The Giulia saloon has been the best Alfa Romeo in a generation, and a car that bears comparison with the mighty BMW 3 Series for how it drives, as well as how it looks. The cabins are a bit cheap in places, and the infotainment is a bit rubbish, but the Giulia is properly soulful to drive, and better built than you’d think.

Used Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio

The Giulia Quadrifoglio is Alfa Romeo’s answer to the BMW M3 and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG. And what an answer… It may ‘only’ have a V6 engine, but with twin turbochargers and an operatic exhaust note, it’s enormous fun. Serious performance is backed up by impressive handling and steering, and the later GTA and GTAm models are almost like four-door Porsche 911 GT3s in their focus on out and out performance. Reliability actually isn’t so far behind Mercedes and BMW levels, but still — buy with care.

Used Alfa Romeo Stelvio

The Stelvio was Alfa Romeo’s first ever SUV, and while it was a bit of a shock for Alfa traditionalists, the rest of us loved it for its combo of style, practicality, and sharp steering and handling. The lack of a hybrid engine has limited its appeal recently, but a 2.2-litre diesel model is a solid used buy, as long as you get one with a full service history.

Used Alfa Romeo Giulietta

The Giulietta is, so far, Alfa Romeo’s last family hatchback, and while it’s utterly gorgeous on the outside, it does suffer from being based on an ancient Fiat chassis underneath. The handling and ride quality are not up to Alfa standards, but the reliability isn’t bad, and it’s a practical family purchase that puts more style than a BMW 1 Series on your driveway for much less cash.

FAQs

Used Alfa Romeos are so cheap because the second hand car market still remembers tales of rampant rust and unreliability from the 1980s. While that’s not — completely — true anymore that distrust among used buyers means Alfas are very affordable second hand, and consequently a bargain for true car enthusiasts.

Yes — with a caveat. That caveat being that while Alfa Romeo has made massive improvements in its quality and reliability over the years, it’s still not as solid in these areas as it should be. While it’s not quite as far behind the likes of BMW and Mercedes-Benz as you might think, it’s certainly not as good as the likes of Lexus nor Honda, and you need to keep that in mind. Basically, you should only buy a used Alfa if you’re prepared to accept the occasional reliability or quality foible, and the styling, driving experience, and the history of the marque make up for that for you.
