Popular used Renault models

Renault’s range of used cars runs the gamut from the super-stylish Clio to the rather plainer Kadjar, but they’re all family-friendly and frugal to run.

Used Renault Clio

The Clio has been providing chic, but affordable, motoring to those looking for a small car since the 1990s. The current model has a classier cabin than most others in its class, but some of the quality is a bit wobbly. Space in the back is only OK, but the three-cylinder turbo petrol engines are peppy. The automatic gearbox isn’t all that good, but the manual ‘box’s shift lever is so clunky that it’s almost worth it.

Used Renault Captur

The Renault Captur has been a hugely popular small SUV ever since the first model was launched back in 2013. This current edition, launched in 2019, is stylish and spacious, although it’s not quite as big inside as the likes of a Skoda Kamiq. There’s a choice of regular petrol or diesel power, or a hybrid and a rarer plug-in hybrid. The hybrid is the best all-rounder, although the gearbox can be a bit strange to use at first. The Captur is mostly reliable, but the interiors can be a bit fragile.

Used Renault Zoe

The Renault Zoe makes an ideal used electric car to buy, and a very good first step on the EV motoring ladder. Make sure you get a battery health check done before buying, as the battery in the Zoe is an older design and not as robust as newer types. On the upside, 22kW AC ‘slow’ charging means you can top the Zoe up from a kerbside charger while you have a (leisurely) lunch, reducing the need for fast charging when you’re out and about. When new, the Zoe had a range of 244 miles, so a well-cared for example should still manage at least 200 miles on a charge. The boot is quite big for a small car, but the cabin is rather narrow.

Used Renault Megane E-Tech Electric

The Renault Megane E-Tech Electric is surely one of the most stylish electric cars around, eschewing the blobby look of a Tesla for something rather sharp and chic. It’s good inside too, where the big touchscreen system is one of the best on the market, even if some of the materials around it are on the cheap side. Although the Megane has a low roof, space inside is decent, and the big-battery model can stretch to almost 280 miles on one charge. It’s even quite sporty to drive and 22kW AC charging is handy for making the most of kerb-side chargers.

Used Renault Kadjar

The Renault Kadjar is basically the same under the skin as a contemporary Nissan Qashqai, but the Kadjar was never quite as popular with customers as its Nissan cousin. That’s definitely not down to the looks — it’s a very handsome car — and not down to the practicality — the boot is even bigger than that of a Qashqai — but it might be down to the cheap-looking cabin, and the lacklustre driving experience. Make sure you buy a 1.5 diesel as the 1.2 petrol is underpowered, although the diesel suffers from turbocharger issues, so buy carefully.

FAQs

Generally speaking, Renault makes reliable cars - but you need to shop around to make sure you get a good one.

Yes, as Renault often makes cars with a bit more style than those of rivals making them desirable on the second-hand market. Renaults are also affordable to service, and tend to have frugal engines.
