Used Mitsubishi cars overview

Mitsubishi has left the UK market now, at least as far as new car sales are concerned, but the brand has a 50-year history of selling vehicles here, so there are still plenty of used Mitsubishis around.

Should you buy one? Obviously, there’s a concern about spare parts and servicing backup. However, since the brand withdrew from the UK new car market in 2020, it did say at the time that “our valued customers can be assured that they will continue to receive full support in terms of service, repair, warranty, recalls, parts and accessories well into the future.” Most of the original network of Mitsubishi dealers still exists and is still able to service and work on used Mitsubishi models, and that should continue for many years to come.

The other good thing about Mitsubishis is that while they were usually not the most exciting cars you could buy, they were also usually reliable and well-made, so they make sensible second-hand purchases now.

Popular used Mitsubishi models

The Mitsubishi car range was made up almost entirely of SUVs and crossovers by the time the brand left the UK in 2020, and it's these cars that make up the bulk of the available second-hand stock now.

Used Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

The Outlander PHEV was way ahead of its time, hitting the market way back in 2013 at a time when pretty much no-one else was selling a plug-in hybrid model. By modern standards, it has limited electric range — 20 miles if you’re lucky — but as an affordable and reliable way to get into electric motoring, the Outlander is a solid choice. It’s roomy, but the cabin looks and feels cheap, and it’s not much fun to drive.

Used Mitsubishi Outlander

As well as the plug-in hybrid model, Mitsubishi offered the Outlander with diesel power and non-hybrid petrol engines. None of which made it any more exciting to drive, but the big advantage of ditching the hybrid was that the Outlander could then be fitted with extra seats, turning it into a seven-seater. Those extra seats were pretty cramped, but useful enough, and the Outlander was never bad to drive; just a bit dull. Again, reliability is the key strength here.

Used Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

Using the Eclipse name — long since associated with an American market coupe — was a risky strategy and it didn’t really pay off for the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross. Yes, it’s one of the better-looking compact SUVs around, and it has a high-quality cabin with decent space. It’s a bit underwhelming to drive, though, and the most common 1.5-litre petrol engine was often tied to an annoying CVT automatic gearbox, which didn’t do it any favours in terms of refinement nor performance. As a used car, it’s a cheap way of getting into a reasonably stylish SUV, but don’t expect any driving thrills.

Used Mitsubishi ASX

Distantly mechanically related to both the Outlander and the Eclipse Cross, the chunky little Mitsubishi ASX wasn’t such a bad car, if you could look past the cheap-o interior fittings and the mildly boring driving experience. It’s not the kind of car you’d leap out of bed to drive in the morning, but as far as solid, reliable, practical used motoring goes, it’s just about passable.

Used Mitsubishi Shogun Sport

Unlike the original Shogun — the 1980s 4x4 that spooked Land Rover into creating the original Discovery — the 2018 Shogun Sport was actually an L200 pickup with some proper bodywork grafted onto the rear. The 2.4-litre diesel engine is noisy and not quick, and while there are seven seats inside, the high floor (thanks to the pickup underpinnings) means space isn’t very good. Crude and noisy and best avoided.

FAQs

Mitsubishi certainly has a reputation for producing reliable, solid cars and while that has taken the occasional hit — the early 2000s Colt hatchback was not a high point — for the most part, Mitsubishis are indeed reliable.

You should buy a used Mitsubishi if you’re after affordable and reliable transport, usually in an SUV shape. Mitsubishis are noticeably cheap right now, so it’s worth picking up the one you want while there’s still good used stock around, and the Outlander PHEV makes a very affordable route into part-electric motoring. However, if you’re looking for driving enjoyment or stylish looks, it’s best to keep searching.
