Used Genesis cars overview

Think of Genesis, and you might picture the prog rock band rather than a car brand. But Genesis cars are becoming more common, offering upmarket petrol, diesel, and electric saloons and SUVs.

As Hyundai Motor Group’s premium brand - much like Lexus for Toyota - Genesis entered the UK market in 2021. Initially offering internal combustion engine (ICE) models, it soon introduced electric options.

On the used market, Genesis SUVs include the GV60 (electric), GV70 (ICE and electric), and the large petrol-powered GV80. Executive saloons include the G70 (petrol) and G80 (ICE and electric), while the G70 Shooting Brake estate is petrol-only.

Electric models tend to be better than petrol, as ICE versions are quite thirsty. However, all Genesis cars come well-equipped, with interiors that surpass mainstream Hyundais.

Originally an online-only brand, Genesis now has a limited number of dealerships. It has performed well in owner satisfaction and reliability surveys, and all cars come with a transferable five-year warranty.

Popular used Genesis models

Although Genesis cars haven’t been around very long, there’s plenty of choice on the used market.

Used Genesis GV60

This is one of the most highly rated Genesis cars, with a wowscore of 8/10. This SUV is very quick and extremely well made, although some owners may find the ride a little too firm.

Used Genesis GV70

The GV70 is a very handsome machine, whether you choose the ICE or electric version. The electric version in particular is very quiet at speed and the cabin has a premium finish, but the 2.5-litre petrol is very thirsty.

Used Genesis GV80

It’s a big old thing, the GV80. Squint a bit and it looks a bit like a Bentley Bentayga. It doesn’t drive like a cut-price Bentley, though, and the suspension is firm. On the plus side, steep depreciation means this large SUV is keenly priced as a used buy.

FAQs

Yes, a used Genesis can make a good buy. Just be aware that the petrol models can have high running costs. As a rule of thumb you can buy roomier alternatives for similar money.

As part of the Hyundai Motor Group, there’s every reason to expect that a Genesis will last for many years. There’s the reassurance of a five-year warranty than transfers from one owner to another.
