Used Dacia cars overview

Dacia represents some of the best value in the whole motoring world when it’s selling you a new car, but that’s slightly reversed in the used car market, as these popular models are in high demand, driving up their second hand values. Still, they were cheap enough to begin with, and models such as the Sandero and Duster are perfect examples of the ‘all the car you need’ philosophy. Dacias tend to be reliable too, although electronic problems aren’t unknown.

Popular used Dacia models

The Dacia used car line-up is simple and straightforward, with a choice of hatchback, people carrier, compact estate, and SUV models, all of which are affordable and rugged.

Used Dacia Duster

Even with a brand new Duster now on sale, a used Dacia Duster represents a terrific buy, especially if you go for a post-2021 facelifted model. This version came with a slightly nicer interior, and an automatic gearbox option for the first time, not to mention sharper exterior styling. The Duster is a supremely relaxing car to drive (although the front seats aren’t the most comfortable) and there’s enough space for a family of four plus their luggage. Diesel 4x4 models are properly capable off-road, if that’s what you need, and all are cheap to buy and run.

Used Dacia Sandero Stepway

The Dacia Sandero Stepway is really just a regular Sandero hatchback but with roof rails, some wheelarch trims, and slightly taller suspension. In spite of its looks, it’s no 4x4 so don’t go trying to tackle forest trails in one, although the extra ride height is useful if you need to use unmade roads on the regular. You can only have the Stepway with a 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine, but you do get a choice of three power outputs and the option of running on LPG fuel.

Used Dacia Sandero

The current Sandero is one of the most sophisticated-looking Dacias ever, and it would be easy, from the outside, to confuse it with a VW Polo. Not something you could ever say about the older models. That’s almost true inside too, although you’ll soon start to spot the sort of cheap plastics that would never pass muster at VW, but the Sandero isn’t badly made — it’s just cheap. It’s also roomy, not bad to drive, and has a sweet three-cylinder petrol engine which can optionally run on LPG if you like. As good and as sensible a used car purchase as you’ll find.

Used Dacia Jogger

Even though the Dacia Jogger is based on the same mechanical bits as the current Sandero hatchback, it’s one of the very few seven-seat cars in which full-sized adults can get comfortable in the third row. Like the Sandero, the Jogger’s cabin is quite cheap, but it’s well-made, even if the front seats aren’t the comfiest and the middle row of seats is, oddly, not as roomy as those in the boot. The 1.0-litre petrol engine is surprisingly peppy, but the 1.6 hybrid (with its automatic gearbox) is a better all-rounder.

FAQs

Yes, used Dacias are reliable. The most common issue — which affects the Sandero especially — is an electrical fault which triggers false warning lights on the dash. The LPG fuel switchover can also be troublesome.

The best all-round used Dacia is the Duster, especially the facelifted second-generation model built from 2021 until 2024. Quite apart from being affordable, it’s also pleasant to drive, roomy inside, reliable, economical, and in diesel 4x4 form, able to tackle quite serious off-road terrain.

Yes, they really do. Even the lowly Sandero can retain more than 50% of its original value after three years, while the Jogger and Duster can do even better than that.
