Used MINI cars overview

The MINI name was revived under BMW ownership back in 2000. These cars have been sought after on the used market as soon as they started to appear on second-hand forecourts.

What began as a single-model range has now grown enormously, with coupés, convertibles and SUVs vying for attention with the MINI Hatch. The first electric MINI appeared in 2020, and these cars are now available in good numbers for used MINI buyers.

Style is the big selling point for any used MINI, and most models are fun to drive too. Reliability has improved in recent years, to the point at which MINI is now one of the most reliable brands on sale.

Popular used MINI models

You want a head-turning car? Put one of these MINIs on your shopping list…

Used MINI 3-Door Hatch

The three-door MINI Hatch is the closest you can get to the spirit of the original Mini from 1959. It’s great fun to drive and looks cool, although whichever generation of used MINI you choose there’s not a huge amount of space in the back. Diesels are economical, but the petrol engines are quieter.

Used MINI Countryman

The Countryman is MINI’s compact SUV. It’s similar in size to the BMW X1 or the Volvo XC40. While the Countryman is a quirky looking and distinctive car, the original model, launched in 2010, had a firm ride and wasn’t especially roomy. The car that replaced it in 2017 is a better all-rounder, while the version launched in 2024 has the most interior space.

Used MINI 5-door Hatch

If you like the look of the three-door MINI but need the convenience of another set of doors, shop for a used MINI five-door hatchback. Perhaps it’s a little less stylish than the three-door, but it’s still a lot more desirable than most runabouts. Some alternatives are more family friendly, but very few are as much fun to drive.

Used MINI Cooper

Cooper is a specification level which has been offered on various MINI models over the years. Choose Cooper versions for a little more performance or a higher level of spec than the basic ‘One’ or ‘Classic’ versions. The Cooper S turns up the wick with more equipment and higher performance than the regular Cooper.

Used MINI Convertible

MINI launched a Convertible to broaden its range in 2004. There have been several generations since, and the Convertible remains a mainstay of the range. As a used buy, the Convertible is a less practical choice than the hatch. Although it has four seats, the back of the car is very cramped, and over-shoulder visibility is poor. With a car this stylish and enjoyable to drive, you may not care.

MINI used cars FAQs

A MINI Cooper can make a reliable buy, especially one of the more recent models. MINI now makes some of the most dependable cars on sale, with very strong performances in reliability studies.

Yes, a MINI is a good used car. Just make sure the specific MINI model you are thinking of meets your needs. Some MINIs are quite small inside compared with alternatives, but almost all MINI models are good-looking and entertaining to drive.

Used MINIs are worth buying, yes. These are desirable, fun used cars. So long as the MINI you are considering suits your requirements and has been serviced regularly, a used MINI is definitely worth buying.

An old MINI can make a very good first car. Steer clear of one of the quicker models, though, as these will be expensive to insure for a young driver.
