Used Jaguar cars overview

Jaguar is one of the most famous names in motoring. With its long history, motor racing pedigree, and a back-catalogue of iconic designs, Jaguar has a loyal and enthusiastic following.

As a new car maker, Jaguar is set to become an all-electric luxury brand. But if you want a petrol or diesel Jaguar at a keen price, you can still shop for a used example.

Over recent years, Jaguar has made cars that are great to drive without necessarily being the very best of their kind. As used cars, the biggest question mark is reliability – a Lexus owner would need therapy after six months of running a Jaguar.

While these are not the cars to choose if you have no patience with the odd fault, a used Jaguar is full of character and driver appeal. Buy the best example you can afford, make sure you have a warranty, and go in with your eyes open.

With a little luck, you’ll enjoy many miles of enjoyable driving behind the wheel of your used Jaguar.

Popular used Jaguar models

Shop for a used Jaguar, and you’ll have a choice of SUVs, saloons, estates, and sports cars.

Used Jaguar F-PACE

Did Jaguar tread on Land Rover’s toes with the launch of the F-Pace? In theory, perhaps, but this fine-driving SUV is aimed at a different audience to a Land Rover. It’s much more enjoyable to drive on a twisting road, but nothing like as capable in the mud and dirt. While a used F-Pace is well equipped, there are roomier cars for similar money.

Used Jaguar E-PACE

One of the best things about most recent Jags is the way they drive. The E-Pace was a rare misstep, lacking the fluency and engagement of the best Jaguars. As a used buy, it’s relatively affordable, looks stylish, and has a plush cabin. But we much prefer the F-Pace.

Used Jaguar I-PACE

Jaguar’s first electric car is very quick and more enjoyable to drive than most EVs. Jag’s engineers were set a tough task in making such a heavy EV ride and handle like a true Jaguar, but they achieved their goal. On the other hand, the I-Pace doesn’t match the range of alternatives from Tesla and the car has performed poorly in reliability surveys.

Used Jaguar XE

Jaguar’s answer to the BMW 3 Series ran the BMW close when it was a new model, without becoming a huge sales success. Today, the XE is good value on the used market. It drives brilliantly, with sharp steering and well-balanced ride and handling. The XE is let down by the cramped rear seats and small boot.

Used Jaguar XF

The larger Jaguar XF drives almost as well as the XE but makes a far more practical car. The rear seats are more accommodating, and the boot is a healthy size. The petrol models are quite thirsty, but high fuel bills are offset by very keen used prices. A used XF is cheaper to buy than equivalent cars from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes.

FAQs

If reliability is a high priority, there are better choices than a Jaguar. Some models are more dependable than others, but as a rule there are alternatives that are more reliable. If the Jag you buy doesn’t come with a warranty, it’s a good idea to arrange to cover yourself.

If you love Jaguar’s heritage and really enjoy driving, then yes. If you want a bullet-proof used car and don’t have the patience for a few niggling faults, then probably not.

The Jaguar F-Pace offers the best blend of performance, style, and practicality. The F-Type sports car and XF saloon and estate are also very good.

Used Jaguars are far from perfect, but they are good buys if you value style, heritage, and driver appeal.
