Used Hyundai cars overview

Hyundai has long since moved on from its bargain-basement origins and now offers a lineup of cars from the affordable and simple i20 and i30 to the exceptionally sophisticated Ioniq 5 and Santa Fe. They’re reliable cars too, but do keep an eye out for issues with the infotainment and sat-nav systems.

Popular used Hyundai models

Hyundai offers a broad spread of models, from tiny city cars to high-performance machines and large, luxurious SUVs

Used Hyundai Tucson

The Tucson has been a huge seller for Hyundai and it’s not hard to see why. Interesting styling on the outside gives way to a roomy, high-tech cabin. Hybrid models are not as economical as you’d want them to be though, so consider going for a simpler diesel instead.

Used Hyundai i10

The i10 is a perfect car for city commuters, with its tiny size and frugal 1.0-litre engines. There is an automatic option, but the manual gearbox is sweeter to drive. The i10’s cabin is more sophisticated now, but the boot remains on the small side.

Used Hyundai i20

Hyundai’s answer to the Ford Fiesta and VW Polo is a good competitor for both, offering a little of the driving fun of the Fiesta (especially in i20 N hot hatch form) and much of the solidity of the VW. The 1.2-litre petrol engine is economical but eager.

Used Hyundai i30

The i30 could be just another dull hatchback, but Hyundai livens it up by offering a sharp-looking Fastback version, and the option of the high-performance i30 N, which rivals the Golf GTI for fun. The standard model is pretty ordinary to drive though, and the cabins are plasticky.

Used Hyundai Kona

The Kona is Hyundai’s compact SUV, and a rival to the likes of the VW T-Roc and Renault Captur. The original model was quite small and felt cheap inside, but the newer version is far more sophisticated and roomy. All-electric models make a great used EV purchase, once you check for battery health.

Hyundai used cars FAQs

All Hyundais are pretty well built, and are backed up by a five-year, unlimited mileage warranty, but in reliability terms the best overall is probably the Santa Fe, as Hyundai built it to tempt premium German car buyers to the brand, and it’s reckoned to be good for a 250,000-mile lifespan if properly serviced.

The answer to this is that it depends on how well any Hyundai is serviced and cared for, but the Korean brand has a good reputation for quality and it’s reckoned that many of its cars can go for more than 200,000 miles with a bit of care.

Yes, they are — Hyundai offers a broad spread of models, from the cheap and cheerful i10 and i20, to the truly luxurious Santa Fe, and they’re all well-priced, reliable, and come with a lengthy warranty.

Yes, in general Hyundai makes very reliable cars. The most commonly-reported faults are with the infotainment and sat-nav systems, rather than engines or gearboxes.
