A used Toyota is one of the most sensible buys you can make. Toyota builds some of the most reliable cars around, so you can buy a used Toyota with confidence.

Very little goes wrong with most popular Toyota models, the company’s reputation for reliability is well deserved. We’ve heard of leaking air conditioning fluid in the Toyota Aygo, and some owners report early clutch wear on certain cars. You’ll be unlucky if you experience a problem, though, and Toyota dealers tend to put things right quickly and efficiently.

Recent Toyotas (sold since the middle of 2021) have a warranty that can last up to 10 years and 100,000 miles, so long as the car is serviced within the main dealer network – another reason to put a used Toyota on the shortlist for your next car.

Used Toyota C-HR

Toyota is known for its sensible cars. The C-HR shows what happens when the company lets its hair down. The styling of both generations is eye-catching, and those funky looks are matched to excellent fuel economy thanks to petrol-electric hybrid power. Practicality does suffer for the sake of style, though – adults won’t be very comfy in the back.

Used Toyota Yaris

The Yaris makes a great used buy, whichever generation you choose. Reliability is excellent, so if you find a car that’s in good condition and has been serviced regularly don’t be put off by age and mileage. Fuel economy is another strong point, although some other small hatchbacks like the Honda Jazz have more rear-seat space.

Used Toyota RAV4

The RAV4 ticks an awful lot of boxes. It’s cheap to run, rarely goes wrong, and has plenty of passenger space. The interior design is a bit dull, but the cabin stands up well to many years of family use. The RAV4’s infotainment is a bit clunky, failing to match the ease of use or crisp graphics offered by some alternatives. But this is a minor failing compared with the RAV4’s many strengths.

Used Toyota Corolla

Think of the Corolla as your most reliable friend. Maybe not the life and soul at parties, but the person you know you can rely on if things turn sour. Toyota’s family hatchback may be ordinary to look at, but beneath the inoffensive styling the Corolla is a reliable and economical buy. Some alternatives have more rear-seat space and are a little cheaper, though.

Used Toyota Aygo

The Aygo is the smallest of Toyota’s recent models, a hatchback so compact you could almost pick it up and put it in your pocket. The small dimensions make it an easy car to drive and park, and it’s one of the best first cars for newly qualified drivers. The tiny size means it’s cramped in the back, even compared with other small cars, and it’s very slow.
