Used Fiat cars overview

Fiat is one of the oldest names in motoring history, but aside from the cute little 500 hatchback, it’s rather fallen out of favour with British buyers recently and electrical reliability issues often rear their head. The good news is that this makes for used car bargains…

Popular used Fiat models

Fiat’s range has been cut down to just the 500 (and its variants) and the Panda in recent years, so your choices in the used market are limited.

Used Fiat 500

In production since 2007, but looking like it comes from 1957, the Fiat 500 is one of the most successful retro-look cars ever. Underneath is the mechanical package from the 2003 Panda, so by now it’s all starting to age a bit, but regular updates have kept the 500 feeling fairly fresh. It’s bouncy to drive, and feels cheap in some places inside, but it’s also fun and stylish. The 1.2-litre and 1.4-litre petrol engines make the most sensible second-hand buys, while the more recent mild hybrid is usefully economical.

Used Fiat 500e

It might look a lot like the 500 that’s been on sale since 2007, but the electric 500e is really quite different, with all-battery power and a totally different structure and chassis. Happily, those classic Italian looks make it rather charming, and the cabin is roomier and more comfortable than that of a standard Fiat 500. The downside is range — even new, a 500e could only cover 200 miles on one charge, and in real-world conditions you might find that drops below 120 miles. Make sure you get a battery health check done before buying.

Used Fiat 500C

How do you make a Fiat 500 even more charming? Simple, you take a tin-opener to the roof and add in a full-length canvas convertible top to create the open-air 500C. The fact that the C keeps the standard model’s doors and roof rails means it’s really more of a super-sized sunroof, but you can open and close the 500C’s roof when driving, and it’s delightful on a sunny day.

Used Fiat 500X

The Fiat 500X was supposed to take the 500’s cute and cuddly styling and expand and inflate it up to being a fashionable small SUV. Well, that’s what happened but the 500X didn’t make a big splash with car buyers, so they now make very cheap used buys. That’s good because the 500X is roomy and largely reliable, but not so good because the interior looks and feels cheap and it’s not great to drive.

Used Fiat Panda

If the 500 is the fashionable Fiat, then the Panda is the sensible older brother who’s actually (whisper it) the more talented one. The Fiat Panda doesn’t look as cool as the 500, but it’s roomier and more practical inside, and about as good to drive (which actually means it’s quite middling). The ultimate used Panda buy is one of the four-wheel drive models, which are astonishingly good fun on snowy days or muddy forest tracks, but which are also surprisingly thirsty should you head out on the motorway.

FAQs

Yes, it is. Fiats suffer from relatively steep depreciation, so it’s definitely best to let someone else deal with that, and then you can nab yourself a used bargain. Quality and reliability are better than they used to be, but make sure you get one with a full service history.
