You will pay more for a used Audi than a mainstream equivalent, and there are Seat, Skoda and VW models that are very similar under the skin. These brands don’t have the same cachet as an Audi, though.

There’s a choice of efficient petrol engines and the A1 Sportback has a high-tech infotainment system. On the other hand, a used MINI is more eye-catching and some alternatives are better value on the second-hand market.

Used Audi A3

The Audi A3 is stylish without being a show off. You pay a premium for that restrained style, though, and you can have a hatchback with more space for less money if you can live with a less upmarket badge. The diesels make great long-distance cars, but the petrol models are more fun – especially the S3.

Used Audi Q2

Buyers who need the practicality of a hatchback but want the imposing style of an SUV will be drawn to the Q2. It’s a handsome car with a stylish interior and plenty of high-tech features. The back seats are a little uncomfortable for adults, though, and even as a used car you pay that bit extra for the prestige of an Audi badge.

The Q3 is larger and more practical than the Q2. It makes a good used buy for any driver who values practicality, space, and a premium badge. While the Q3 isn’t as much fun as the equivalent BMW, it is comfortable and quiet on the motorway. The TFSI petrol models make efficient all-rounders, while the TDI diesels suit high-mileage driving.

Used Audi Q5

If you are looking for a five-seat SUV with plenty of space for the family, take a close look at the Audi Q5. It may not be cheap as a used buy but it’s far more affordable for the second or third owner. It’s solidly made, roomy, and eats up the miles on the motorway. The hybrid system in the plug-in model could be smoother, though.
